What SD Card do You Need for GoPro Hero 7?

GoPro Hero 7 is an amazing camera, it captures high-quality videos with high frame rates. But, high-quality videos also need high-speed video encoding this means you will need an SD Card with high read and write speed.

Video write speed for GoPro hero 7 is about 60 MB/sec on a 4k video resolution. This is where problems occur, some GoPro users buy SD Cards not knowing that the SD Card has a slow write speed.

Write Speed is the capacity of a storage device on how much information it can save per second. So an SD Card with a write speed of 10 MB/sec would not be suitable for GoPro Hero 7 that records video at a speed of 60 MB/sec.

As a result, if you try to record videos on 4k resolution or high frame rate you will encounter SD Error because the SD Card simply cannot keep up with the information that the GoPro is throwing at it.

SD Cards are categorized based on their speed classes.

  • Class 10 is designed to save video recordings with a resolution of 1080p or lower. SD Cards rated at CLASS 10 has a write speed of up to 10 MB/sec.
  • UHS 1 is almost similar to Class 10 SD Cards but uses a newer generation of technology and can hold 10 MB/sec write speeds more consistently.
  • UHS 3 or V30 SD Cards rated at this class can hold write speeds of up to 30 MB/sec and is specifically built for 4k video recording.
  • V60 and V90 these SD Cards are overkill if you are going to use it for your GoPro. It has a write speed of up to 60 MB/sec for V60 and 90 MB/sec for V90 which is suitable for 8k video recording.
