Write Speed

The first thing that you should check when buying an SD Card is the write speed. It is the most important specification of a memory card. Write speed determines the speed of an SD Card to store data on its flash memory every second. For example, If you are going to transfer movies, games, or photos to your memory card having an SD Card with fast write speed would mean a quicker saving of data to your memory card.

Action cameras and professional cameras also need memory cards with fast write speed. Recording high-resolution videos on your camera would also need a memory card that can accept high volumes of data every second.

For example, a GoPro that is set to record 4k videos at 60 frames per second would need to transfer 7.5 MB of data to your memory card every second. Using memory cards that cannot keep up with your camera’s encoding speed would result in SD Card errors or videos with unstable framerates and the worst-case multiple file corruptions.

The Samsung Evo Plus packs a 90 MB per second write speed while the SanDisk Extreme memory card also features a 90 MB per second write speed. Both cards support 4k video recording and rated at UHS-3. In terms of write speed, both cards offer the same performance but, the Samsung Evo Plus is around $10 cheaper compared to the SanDisk Extreme model.

Read Speed

The ability of a card to transfer files to another storage device at a given rate is determined by the read speed. Fast file transfer speed is important especially if you are a professional photographer who needs to meet deadlines. So, if you don’t want to waste time waiting for slow file transfer to finish, you should consider getting a card with high read speeds.

Most of the time, you would need to transfer videos and photos from your camera to your computer or another storage device to free up some space on your camera’s memory card. If you have a maxed-out 128 GB memory card with a slow read speed and want to offload the card it will take hours to transfer your files.

SanDisk Extreme has a read speed of up to 160 MB per second compared to Samsung Evo Plus’ 100 MB per second. The SanDisk Extreme offers 60 MB per second faster read speed which is beneficial for large file transfers. The $10 higher price point for the SanDisk Extreme is quite reasonable given the performance difference in file transfer speed.

SanDisk vs Samsung: Our Opinion

For us, the SanDisk Extreme is better compared to the Samsung Evo Plus even if it is $10 cheaper. Given that most modern cameras shoot 4k videos this also translates to higher video file size. For example, an hour of video from a Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera would take up to 80 GB of storage on a resolution of 4k which is four times the resolution of 1080P.

The SanDisk Extreme would transfer files quicker than the Samsung Evo Plus thanks to its 160 MB per second transfer speed.

To sum things up, If you are considering buying the Samsung Evo Plus save up a bit more and spend the extra $10 on the SanDisk Extreme memory card, which also offers a better speed performance.
